Conditions

Glaucoma

Description

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which vision can be partially or completely lost, sometimes without warning, and it is silent. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve leading from the eye to the brain, resulting in partial or complete blindness. Chronic or acute increased intraocular pressure is commonly present. Aqueous humor (fluid inside the eye) flowing through channels to maintain eye health and function becomes blocked. Surgery and prescription medications to slow the disease's progression, and it may develop at any age though it is often seen in seniors.

Symptoms

  • Progressive narrowing of visual field
  • Increase ocular pressure
  • Seeing halos around lights at night

How Cannabis Can Help

Cannabinoids reduce intraocular pressure (THC & CBN perform better than CBD, which increased pressure in mice). CB1 & CB2 receptors, TRPV channels, PPAR, and other cannabinoid targets are found throughout the human eye offering neuroprotection, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. THC via inhalation lowers intraocular pressure by 25-35%, and recent trials of dronabinol also worked to lower IOP.
